You may have once heard your dentist say that your tooth has developed an abscess, but what is it anyway?
It is a dental condition where the collection of pus has developed following any infection. It may occur in your gums, around the root of your tooth or within your jawbone. It is commonly caused by tooth decay where an infection slowly destroys the tooth and its contents.
The infection starts from the pulp to the tips of the roots. It will then spread into the surrounding bone. An injury can also result to dental abscess. Food particles or bacteria which were trapped within the gums can also cause infection and latter develop into abscess. People who have medical problems like diabetes are prone to develop dental abscess.
Dental abscesses may be experienced by any person at any age group. You will experience pain associated with or without chewing if you have an abscess. You can also observe redness and swelling of your gums on the area where the abscess developed. Chewing will also become very difficult and painful at times. It’s not unusual to have a really bad taste in your mouth.
Untreated dental abscesses can result to the breaking of the bag of pus into the mouth or the face. This will cause foul breath, foul taste, and even an ugly scar. In some cases, the abscess can spread within the face and the neck region which can result to a more serious life threatening condition.
